Bulldogs Sweep Doubles Matches But Fall To UC Davis

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team lost 4-3 to UC Davis in a non-conference match Friday. Freshman Muzeen Ismath and junior Zhia Hwa Chong each produced a pair of wins in the match.
The Bulldogs (2-3) got off to a strong start against the Aggies (1-1) with a sweep in all three doubles matches. Junior Scott Sullivan and Chong dominated at No. 1 doubles and earned their 10th win together in the 2010-11 season. Juniors Jake Davis and Tyler Campbell also dominated their match at the No. 2 spot, defeating Alec Haley and Connor Coates 8-3. Senior Kevin Eischen and Ismath had a battle at the No. 3 spot but the pairing defeated Jack Horowitz and Chris Aria to help the Bulldogs complete the sweep.
The Aggies rallied and won four of the six singles matches. For the Bulldogs, Chong defeated Arias 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to win his ninth match of the year and Ismath beat Horowitz 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
Sophomore Levin Guillermo and Toki Sherbakov played to a tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot. Guillermo won the first set 6-4 but Sherbakov came back and won the next two 6-3, 6-4.
The Zags take on West Coast Conference foe University of Portland Saturday at 2 p.m.
