Guillermo Leads Gonzaga To Victory Over Montana State

SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore Levin Guillermo's three and a half hour No. 1 singles match helped the Gonzaga University men's tennis team defeat Montana State University 4-3 Friday at the Spokane Racquet Club in the Bulldogs (3-7) final home match of the year.
Guillermo and the Bobcats (2-7) Pawel Turzanski opened singles play and were the last ones to finish. Guillermo won the first set 7-6 and was ahead 5-2 in the second but Turzanski rallied and won 7-5 to force a tiebreaker. Guillermo was able to fend off two match points to break a 5-5 tie to win the match for the Bulldogs.
Juniors Scott Sullivan and Zhia Hwa Chong also picked up singles wins. Sullivan defeated Diego Campos Contreras 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 position and Chong beat Markus Schlueter 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.
In doubles competition junior Jake Davis and freshman Muzeen Ismath won 8-4 over Campos Contreras and Alberto Fuentes at the No. 2 position and senior Kevin Eischen and Guillermo secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
Up next for the Zags is a spring break trip to southern California to face the College of Charleston in Los Angeles, Calif., Monday, Occidental College Tuesday and UC Riverside Thursday.
