Chong Wins Again But Bulldogs Fall To Gaels

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to West Coast Conference opponent Saint Mary's College Saturday.
The Bulldogs (5-12, 0-4 WCC) had a couple of battles in singles play with junior Zhia Hwa Chong, who is coming off a singles victory Friday at 72nd-ranked University of San Francisco, led the efforts at the No. 4 position. Hewon the first set 6-3 and after losing the second 3-6, he bounced back to win the tiebreaker 1-0 (13-11).
Sophomore Levin Guillermo and junior Scott Sullivan also played a three-set match at Nos. 1 and 6, respectively. After losing the first set 6-2, Guillermo forced a third with a 6-4 second set victory but his opponent Maxime Olivan won the third set 1-0 (10-4). Sullivan claimed the first set 6-4 but Joakim Norstrom won the next two 7-5, 1-0 (10-2).
Guillermo and junior Jake Davis picked up Gonzaga's only doubles win, defeating Norstrom and Steven Dawson-Roberts 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.
The Bulldogs wrap up their WCC tour in the Bay Area against 57th-ranked Santa Clara University Sunday at 10 a.m.
