Seniors Help Bulldogs Beat Warriors In Home Finale

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team send its four seniors off with a 5-2 win over Lewis-Clark State College Sunday in the Bulldogs final home match of the season.
Seniors Rika Mehndiratta, Danielle Farmer, Clare Dodge and Jackie Tabb helped Gonzaga (8-9) take the doubles point. Mehndiratta and Farmer picked up an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position while Dodge and Tabb earned an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Sophomores Britta Stime and Gabrielle Verspieren completed the sweep with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot.
The Bulldogs won four of the six singles matches over the Warriors (4-12). Dodge beat Dorothy Chong 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 2 position to earn her 12th win of the season while Farmer and Tabb extend their win streaks in singles to four with wins at Nos. 3 and 4. Mehndiratta dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Dominika Jasova at No. 1.
Sophomore Taurie Bjerken had a battle with Samantha Teigen at the No. 5 position. Bjerken won the first set 6-1, Teigen won the second 7-5 and Bjerken won the tiebreaker 10-3 to win Gonzaga's fifth point.
Freshman Kelly Humphrey made her dual season debut against Chelsea Gay at the No. 6 position. Although she won the first set 6-4, Gay won the next two 6-4, 10-7.
"It was great to continue to play well as a team and get another win," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We had a great senior day, but it was very emotional to watch this unbelievable group of ladies play their last home match at Gonzaga. It has been a very special class that has brought this program to new heights. Although we still have work left to do this year, we will definitely take some time to appreciate what these four players have done over the colligate career."
The Bulldogs head to Cheney, Wash., Wednesday to play Eastern Washington University at 3 p.m.
