Rhodes Honored as September's Zag of the Month

SPOKANE, Wash. - Sarah Rhodes, a senior captain and forward on the Gonzaga women's soccer team has been named September's Zag-of-the-Month for her stellar work on and off the field. Rhodes demonstrates her success in the classroom as a criminal justice major, also working toward a minor in sport management. Outside of the classroom, Rhodes has been putting together a great season for the Zags along with taking advantage of opportunities to give back to the community.
Rhodes, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, has been a key contributor to the women's soccer program throughout her time at GU. During her freshmen year, Rhodes started in 18 matches and was tied for most goals scored (3). As a sophomore, she tied for most goals scored (4) and led the team in points (10). Last season as a junior year, she not only tied for most goals on the team (5), but also finished in a two-way tie for third in the West Coast Conference in assists, and a three-way tie for match-winning goals (3). Rhodes' accomplishments are continuing during the 2011 campaign, as she is tied for the most goals scored (3), is leading the team in points (10), while also being honored as a WCC Player of the Week in September.
Rhodes has excelled beyond the classroom and the field. She has participated in several community outreach projects during her time at Gonzaga, including volunteering at Union Gospel Mission serving food to those in need, collecting shoes for Soles4Souls, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at the USA Cross Country Championships, speaking at St. George Elementary School and helping with St. Margaret's Shelter's Vinegar Flats Garden.
A student-athlete selected as Zag-of-the-Month exhibits effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, campus involvement, community service, dedication to team, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future GU students and student-athletes. Each month, GU's S.A.A.C. nominates and selects one of their peers for the award.
