SEATTLE, Wash. - The fall season wrapped for most of the members of the Gonzaga University men's tennis team Saturday at the Pacific Northwest Intercollegiate at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus.
"Today did not go how we would have liked, but that does not take away from what we accomplished this fall season," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "Our guys battled from start to finish all season. I am really proud and very optimistic for the spring season."
The tournament was divided into two draws, the Pacific draw and the Northwest draw, for both singles and doubles play.
The Bulldogs only had Alvaro Nazal and the doubles team of Olivier Jamin and Vladimir Mijatovic remaining in their respective draw.
Nazal was in the quarterfinals of the Pacific draw and faced the No. 5 seed Stefan Micov from the University of Portland. Nazal entered as the No. 4 seed.
It was a close match but unfortunately Micov got the better of the Santiago, Chile, native and Nazal was eliminated after a 7-5, 3-6, 5-3 defeat.
"It was a tough match but Alvaro should be feeling good about his accomplishments," MacDonald said. "The experience his gained this season will really help prepare him for the spring."
The Jamin and Mijatovic tandem faced the duo of Brent Chin and Michael Schaeffer from the University of Oregon in the Northwest doubles draw.
It was a well contested match but the Oregon pair handled the Bulldogs and GU exited with an 8-4 defeat.
"Doubles are always interesting," MacDonald said. "It is hard to tell who works well with who but Olivier and Vlad played well together. I like what they did this weekend."
Play resumes Sunday to declare a title for each of the draws with a number of consolation matches as well. Sunday will also mark the conclusion of the fall season for the Zags who return to action in the spring.
