Nazal, Sullivan Pick Up Wins In Zags Loss To Lions

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Alvaro Nazal and Scott Sullivan each picked up a point with wins in singles play, but the Gonzaga University men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Loyola Marymount University in a West Coast Conference match Sunday.
Sullivan and his doubles partner Zhia Hwa Chong got the day started with an 8-2 win over Alex Wilton and Felix van Kann at the No. 1 spot, but the Lions (10-11, 3-2 WCC) evened the score when Nicholas Bjerke and Daniel Simko defeated Olivier Jamin and Vladimir Vijatovic 8-1 on court two. The Lions would secure the lone point when of Todd Volmari and Nick Northcott edged Nazal and Muzeen Ismath 9-7 on court three.
Nazal tied the match at one point apiece when he picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Wilton at No. 1 singles, but Volmari's 6-3, 6-1 victory over Levin Guillermo on court two gave the Lions a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs (8-10, 1-5 WCC) bounced back after Sullivan cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Northcott at No. 6 singles to tie the match 2-2.
The Lions earned their third point when van Kann defeated Chong 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Sebastian Bustamante's 6-3, 6-4 win over Jamin on court three secured the match.
At No. 5 singles, Vijatovic rebounded from a 6-0 first-set loss by winning the second set 6-3, but Simko won the tiebreaker 6-3 to give the Lions a 5-2 lead.
The Bulldogs will close out their regular-season schedule this coming weekend with three matches at the Spokane Racquet Club. The Bulldogs will host the University of San Francisco Friday at noon, 32nd-ranked Santa Clara University Saturday at 11 a.m. and Lewis-Clark State College Sunday at noon.
