Zags Close WCC Season With Loss To No. 30 Broncos

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 West Coast Conference decision to 30th-ranked Santa Clara University at the Spokane Racquet Club Saturday.
Zhia Hwa Chong led the effort for the Bulldogs (8-12, 1-7 WCC) at No. 5 singles against Tom Pham. Chong bounced back from a second-set loss but Pham clinched a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 win over the Bulldog senior. Vladimir Mijatovic came close to forcing a third set, but Ilya Osintsev held on to win 6-1, 7-6 on court five. Scott Sullivan also was close to clinching a set win, but Eugene Muchynski held on to win 7-5, 6-0.
Several Bulldogs also took on Broncos players who are nationally-ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Alvaro Nazal battled with 68th-ranked Kyle Dandan at No. 1 singles, but the freshman Bulldog fell 6-3, 6-4. Chong and Sullivan, who together are ranked 79th in doubles, fell 8-3 to No. 84 Osintesev and John Lamble on court one.
The Bulldogs will close out the regular-season with a non-conference match against Lewis-Clark State College Sunday at noon.
