MACON, Ga. - The Gonzaga University men's golf team shot a final round 300 Sunday to tie its best round of the tournament and Peter Gullickson finished at 223 to tie for 47th at the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship hosted by Mercer University at the Brickyard at Riverside.
The Bulldogs finished 14th at 913 (313-300-300), two shots behind Boston College.
"We played all right most of the day but played the final three holes poorly and doubled our score in relation to par," explained Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray after the tournament ended. "We can't let the last few holes destroy the round."
Gullickson shot a final round one-over par 73 over the 7,175, par 72 course to go with rounds of 72 and 78.
Sophomore Sean Walsh tied Gullickson with Sunday's best score of one-over par 73; also the best round of the tournament for Walsh. He coupled his 73 with a 78 and 74 for a 54-hole 225 and tied for 55th.
Rounding out play Sunday for Gonzaga was junior Brendan Connolly with a 76 (81; 238), sophomore Sean Carlino with a 78 (T75; 234) and junior Erik Krzyzanowski with a 78 (T77; 235).
"As a whole we carried ourselves pretty good today but not as good as yesterday," stated Gray. "We need to be consistent with that area of the game."
Mercer won the team title with an 837 (284-272-281); good for a two-stroke victory over Georgia Tech. Emmanuel Kountakis of Mercer, Hans Reimers of Mercer and Seth Reeves of Georgia Tech were tri-champions with final scores of 207.
The Bulldogs will conclude the fall season Oct. 21-22 at the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge at the Wood Ranch Country Club in Northridge, Calif.
Gray believes having two weeks before the Zags next event is much needed. Gonzaga just completed four events in four weeks.
"We have a couple of week before our next event. It's the first time we get to take some time and work on things because our schedule has been so busy this fall," explained Gray.
