Bulldogs Tennis Fall To Santa Clara At WCC Championships

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Just days five days removed from facing Santa Clara University in the regular season, the Gonzaga University men's tennis team dropped its rematch with the Broncos at the 2013 West Coast Conference Championships 4-0, ending the Bulldogs season.
The Bulldogs went down in doubles No.1 and No. 2 matches giving the Broncos an early 1-0 lead.
Jack Schoebel and Olivier Jamin, at No. 1, were downed 8-3 to John Lamble and Ilia Osintsev. The freshman duo of Hayden Smith suffered a similar fate at No. 2 going down 8-0 to Matt Kecki and Tom Pham.
Because the Broncos clinched the doubles point, the No. 3 match featuring Alvaro Nazal and Pablo Mosquera Pérez did not finish. The two did have a 7-6 lead in the set over Eugene Muchysnki and Tomasz Soltyka.
Gonzaga battled in singles but Santa Clara won three matches to advance in the nine-team championship tournament.
At No. 3, Jamin dropped to Kecki 6-2, 6-4; No. 4 Vladimir Mijatovic was bested by Pham 6-2, 6-3; and Varas went down fighting 6-3, 7-5 to Muchynski.
By clinching the match, the other three singles matches were not finished. The Zags were however leading in two of those matches.
At No. 1, Nazal was ahead 7-6 (3), 1-0 over Lamble before the match was called and so was Smith 7-6 (1), 4-1 over Soltyka.
Levin Guillermo who was playing No. 2, was in a back-and-forth affair with Osintsev 6-4, 6-6 (5-5) when the Bulldogs day ended.
The Zags wrap up the year with a 7-15 record and also bid farewell to seniors Guillermo and Jamin. Guillermo was a four-year player for the program who was success academically matched his court accomplishments. Jamin, a captain, developed into a reliable contributor to the program with his leadership on and off the court.
