Three Bulldogs Advance To Semifinals At EWU Fall Classic

CHENEY, Wash. - Nick Kamisar, Vladimir Mijatovic and Jack Schoebel advanced to the semifinals in their draws and three Gonzaga University men's tennis matches saw the Bulldogs drop a seeded player on the first day of the Eastern Washington University Fall Classic Friday.
Kamisar, playing in Flight One, had no issues in his two matches of the day. The Sammamish, Wash., native cruised through Ethan Vaughn (University of Montana) 6-2, 6-2; and followed with a 6-2, 6-4; winner over Wacil Bendjelti (Eastern Washington). He will face Cristobal Ramos (University of Idaho) Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the same draw, Mijatovic opened against third seed Cesar Torres (Idaho). Mijatovic came out strong and took the match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). He followed that match with a victory over Andrew Warren (Montana) 6-2, 6-2; to earn his way into the semifinals.
Vicente Varas was also in Flight One and upset fourth seed Mikolai Caruk (Montana) 6-3, 6-1; in the round of 16. Unfortunately Varas fell in his second match to Kamisar's semifinal opponent Ramos 6-2, 6-3.
In Flight Two, Schoebel breezed through to the semifinals. He opened with an impressive 6-4, 6-4; bout over Stefan Farrar (Eastern Washington) and downed Ian Clare (Seattle University) 6-3, 7-5; in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Hayden Smith entered as the top seed in Flight Two and won his opener over Sonam Phuntsok (Lewis-Clark State College) 6-3, 6-2. Smith would be upset in the quarterfinals to Semion Branzburg (Montana) 7-5, 6-2.
Pablo Mosquera Pérez lost his opening match in Flight Two to second seed Andrew Zedde 7-5, 6-1. The defeat dropped Mosquera Pérez to the consolation draw where he defeated Haseeb Khan (Lewis-Clark State) 6-4, 6-2. He will compete in the semifinals of the consolation Saturday.
Joey Brandt made his way to the quarterfinals of Flight Three. An opening round bye allowed him to face and defeat Alex Wallace (University of Portland) 6-2, 6-2; to advance.
Muzeen Ismath and Chris Dalton also had byes in their opener of Flight Three. However both would drop and move into the consolation bracket. Ismath received a bye in his consolation opener and will face Sam Elsethagen (Lewis-Clark State) in the quarterfinals Saturday. Dalton narrowly fell in his consolation match against Alex Braun (Montana) 7-5, 4-6, 11-9.
The last Bulldog upset over a seeded opponent came in doubles.
Ismath and Dalton teamed up in the White Doubles Flight and knocked off second seeded duo of Zach Drost and Branzburg 8-5 (Montana).
The Zags took home another doubles contest but this time in the Red Doubles Flight. Smith and Brandt took an 8-7 winner over Andrew Zedde and Matt Oddonetto (Idaho).
The EWU Fall Classic resumes Saturday with matches taking place all day.
