BEALLSVILLE, Md.—The Gonzaga University men's golf team began its second tournament of the season Monday, playing the first of two rounds at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, held at The Members Club at Four Streams.
"We came to this event with the intention of being in contention to win going into the final round, and having the tournament shortened to 36 holes doesn't leave any room to have an off round," said Gonzaga men's golf head coach Robert Gray. "We had that round today. As one can see from our scores, the fourth score really hindered our ability to post a good team score. We sit 13 back with one round left. That's definitely not out of reach but we'll need four solid rounds tomorrow to have any chance."
Senior James Fahy is tied for second after firing his best round of the young season, a 1-under-par 70. He took 35 strokes on both the front and back nines to reach the score.
Freshman Will Brueckner is next up for the Zags with a first-round score of 73, two strokes above par. The mark ties him for 16th in the tournament. He sits one stroke above teammate Sean Walsh, who's tied for 24th at 3-over 74.
The final two Gonzaga competitors are also within one stroke of each other. Brendan Connolly is 58th after a first-round tally of 80, nine strokes over par, and David Ganz is tied for 59th at 10-over 81.
"James put together a solid round and is one shot off the lead," said Gray of the senior. "He's a seasoned veteran and knows he just needs to go out and play his round then see how it all falls together. Will and Sean fought through their rounds and kept themselves in the hunt for the individual title as well."
As a team, the Zags are tied for fifth with five other schools at 297, 13 strokes above par. Toledo is first at even-par 284, and the Rockets' Otto Black tops the individual leaderboard at 2-under-par 69.
Monday's action was shortened from two rounds to just one after frost closed the course until 10:30 a.m. Eastern. As a result, the tournament will now consist of just two rounds instead of the planned three. The Zags will begin the second and final round at 8:40 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
