SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga University men's tennis team wrapped up its own Gonzaga Fall Tournament in impressive fashion Sunday, winning all three main brackets of the tournament held at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash.
"It was a great for us to sweep our own tournament this weekend," said Gonzaga men's tennis head coach Peter MacDonald. "Alvaro and Nick continued to play well together and I'm pleased to see that. Also, I'm happy for Sergio. With his play this weekend, he's shown that he will be a contributor for us this season."
Alvaro Nazal and Nick Kamisar tallied the first flight victory, taking down Montana State's Niklas Brandes and Harry James 8-2 to win the doubles flight. This was their second main doubles flight victory of the year as the Zag duo also won the top doubles bracket at the EWU Fall Classic Sept. 26-28.
Nazal also picked up his first singles flight win of the fall, posting two more singles wins in the process. He beat Portland's Mathieu Garcia 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals and took down Idaho's Felipe Fonseca in consecutive 6-4, 6-4 sets for the title. It's Nazal's first bracket win since 2012 when he won both the EWU Fall Classic and Boise State Appleton Classic.
Last but not least, Sergio Chip wrapped up his strongest weekend of the fall, tallying a pair of victories to win the Red Singles main flight. The senior beat Portland's Kent Andreasan 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals and beat Portland State's Will Cochrane 7-6, 6-1 for the bracket title. Chip was the only player in the tournament not to lose a set in singles play.
With the conclusion of the Gonzaga Fall Tournament, the Zags have just one tournament left in the fall season. They'll head west to Seattle for the PNW Intercollegiates Nov. 7-9 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
