SPOKANE, Wash. — While temperatures will hover around the mid-50s on the Gonzaga University campus this weekend, the Zags' men's golf team will be a bit warmer at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Temperatures will be in the low-80s on the island of Maui, as the Bulldogs close their fall schedule at the three-day event. Gonzaga joins 12 other programs in the field, including Oregon and Clemson, which are ranked second and 27th in the latest GolfStat relative rankings.
The Ka'anapali Golf Course plays 6,700 yards and has a par of 71. The 54-hole tournament begins with a shotgun start Friday morning at 8 Hawaiian Time.
"This is a new event and we haven't seen the course before," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Sean Walsh has played the course and he'll be able to give us more insight into the course than we'd normally get at a course we haven't seen before. Our goal is to play the tournament one shot at a time and not get caught up in playing against other teams. It's just us against the course."
The Bulldogs are coming off of an eighth place team finish at the Georgetown Intercollegiate. The tournament in Beallsville, Md., was on Oct. 20-21. Gonzaga finished 25-over-par, totaling 593 strokes.
Walsh fired a one-under-par, 70, during the final round, and placed 10th. He counted 144 strokes (+2) during the tournament. James Fahy tied for 14th with a two-day total of 146, four strokes over par. With the top-15 spots, both Walsh and Fahy saw their best finishes of the young season.
Will Brueckner tied for 34th with 150 (+8) strokes over both rounds. Brendan Connolly tied for 45th. He wrapped up the tournament 11-over-par. David Ganz ended the tournament with 159 strokes (+17) and in 62nd place.
Walsh is currently averaging a 73.4 round, closely followed by Fahy's 73.8 average. Through five rounds, the duo is separated by only two strokes.
Fahy will play as the No. 1 for the Zags this week. Walsh will be the second, followed by Connolly, Brueckner, and Ganz.
Live scoring from the tournament will be available on GoZags.com. The classic tees off Friday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
