LAHAINA, Hawaii — After rainy and windy conditions during the second round of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, the Gonzaga University men's golf team went from fifth to sixth place Saturday.
The Zags shot a single round school record of 274 in first round Friday, but battled steady 20 mile-per-hour winds, with gusts up to 30 miles-per-hour in Round 2. Rain soaked the golfers through the first 14 holes.
"After playing in perfect conditions yesterday, the wind and rain arrived today, making it very difficult," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Today was about grinding through the conditions and surviving. We did a good job in that area and I'm proud of the guys for grinding it out. This was one of the toughest days of weather, I've ever seen. The scores clearly show how tough it played, with teams shooting 20 to 30 shots higher today."
The Bulldogs carded a team total of 305 (+21) in the second round. Their 274 strokes were 10-under-par Friday. All 13 teams in the tournament all posted higher totals than in Round 1.
James Fahy leads the Zags with a 142 total through two rounds. The senior was three-over-par on Day 2, with a 74. He sits in 16th place at even par entering the final round. Sean Walsh slid to 28th with a 77 (+6) in the second round. He is three-over-par with a 145-stroke total. Brendan Connolly had the second-best round for GU Saturday. The Castle Rock, Colo. native fired a 76 (+5). He is tied for 34th.
Also in 34th, David Ganz has a 146 total through the first two rounds. He shot seven-over-par with a 78 Saturday. Will Brueckner was also seven-over-par in the second round, and is in 48th.
"We had some unfortunate breaks with losing two balls in areas where they should've been easily found," Gray said. "Considering those, our score today is right in there with some highly ranked programs after a tough test today. We're still within reach of third place at 10 shots back and we have a lot of teams right behind us."
Oregon still leads the classic at 23-under-par. It was seven-over-par in Round 2. The Ducks have a 21-stroke lead over Georgia, which also shot a second round-best seven-over. Georgia went from sixth to second Saturday.
Jonathan Woo of Oregon is the new leader at seven-under-par. He shot a 72 (+1) in the second round. The Ducks have all five of its golfers in the top 10.
"For tomorrow, we just have to go out and take it one shot at a time, keeping our focus on the present," Gray said. "We can't control or worry about anyone else, just take care of our business."
Sunday's weather is forecasted to be sunny with winds between eight to 13 miles per hour. The third and final round begins Sunday at 8 a.m. Hawaiian Time. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
