CHENEY, Wash.—Senior Nick Kamisar left the EWU Fall Classic overburden with hardware Sunday after winning both the main singles and doubles draws at the annual tournament held on the Eastern Washington Tennis Courts in Cheney, Wash.
Kamisar won the ‘A' singles bracket by beating top-seeded teammate Alvaro Nazal. Kamisar, the bracket's second seed, won the first set via a tiebreak at 7-6 (6) and followed that up with a 6-3 victory in the second set. The win gave Kamisar his first EWU Fall Classic main bracket win.
Nazal was playing for his third career Fall Classic victory, having won the ‘A' bracket in both 2011 and 2012.
The two then teamed up to win the tournament's doubles draw, beating the Idaho team of Mark Kovacs and Odon Barta in straight sets. The Zag duo needed an extra game to take the first set 7-5, but breezed to a 6-2 victory in the second to capture the doubles title.
The Nazal/Kamisar duo wasn't the only Gonzaga doubles team to play on Sunday. Sergio Chip and Vicente Varas took on Cristobal Ramos and Felipe Fonseca for the doubles consolation bracket title. The Bulldog duo fell in straight sets to the Vandals, however, 6-1, 6-4.
"For our first tournament, I was really proud of the way that our guys competed," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "We've been working very hard in practice and it was good to see improvement as well as areas that we can continue to develop."
With their first tournament in the books, the Zags will now turn their attention to the ITA Northwest Regionals, held Friday, Oct. 17 to Sunday, Oct. 19 in Palo Alto, Calif.
