Nov. 6, 2015 SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Gonzaga women's soccer student-athlete Heather Johnson was named to the West Coast Conference Women's Soccer All-Academic Team for the third time Friday.
Johnson is only the second Zag in program history to receive the honor three times. Ashley Haugen was a recipient in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Johnson was the lone three-time member of the team on this year's list.
Fellow Bulldogs Karley Baggerly, Sarah Carter and Kristin Hayman each received All-Academic honorable mention honors this season. It's the second straight season Baggerly was named honorable mention.
Johnson boasts a 3.77 GPA as a business major. She was tabbed All-WCC First Team last season after being named Second Team in 2013. She was named Preseason All-Conference this year, but battled an injury early in the season. She started every Gonzaga game the past three seasons coming into this year (58), and has started 71 of the 72 games in her career.
Baggerly, a business major with a 3.56 GPA, currently leads the WCC with seven goals this season. She moved to fourth on the program's all-time list with 17 goals scored in her career. The junior is also fourth on the all-time list with 43 points. Her 119 total shots are seventh in program history.
Hayman has started 16 of the Zags' 18 games. She has become a key attacker and midfield player for GU. She is third on the team with 28 shots taken so far this season, with 11 going on goal. The redshirt sophomore is a Human Physiology major with a 3.86 GPA.
Carter, who has a major in Nursing with a 3.68 GPA, has played every Gonzaga game in the past three seasons (56). After playing the second-most minutes in the field last year (1,693), she has played the most minutes of any player on the team this season (1,721). She has been a staple in the Zag defense for the past three years, and has been integral in 10 shutouts over her career.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to her team. This season no fewer than 62 WCC women's soccer student-athletes met the criteria for selection easily outdistancing the 53 eligible in 2014.
