SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga Athletic Department recently completed a lighting project around its Luger Field soccer complex.
The six new banks of lights give the Zags' women's and men's soccer programs the chance to play games when the sun sets. The lights provide an atmosphere that will grow an already energized fan base. Game times can be moved later, which prevents students from having conflicts with class. It also allows parents and families more time following work days and school days.
"The addition of the lights to the field gives us more opportunities to showcase our soccer programs in the evenings and reach a wider fan base," Gonzaga Director of Athletics Mike Roth said. "We want to thank those who supported this project and continue to support our student-athletes. Our soccer teams are grateful for this fantastic addition."
The lights have been on the GU campus since arriving in November. The 228 bulbs on the half-dozen poles were all then put together and installed.
"The addition of lights to Luger Field is a dream come true," GU women's soccer head coach Amy Edwards said. "It's hard to put into words the feeling of stepping out on the field under lights on game day. The team and staff are looking forward to playing under the lights and providing our fans with an electric atmosphere."
"The new lights are a huge improvement to our soccer facility and our soccer environment," Bulldogs' men's soccer head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "It's a great improvement for our fans and students. It will give them a better opportunity to watch our games, enhancing the overall student experience at Gonzaga. Getting the lights is a giant step in completing our soccer facility. On behalf of our coaching staff and our players, we give a big thank you for everyone who made this possible."
About Luger Field
Opened in 2008, Luger Field is one of the best facilities on the West Coast. The first game on the new field was a women's soccer game against Portland State University, Aug. 24. The first of four phases included the main playing field and a practice field, the plaza, press box, main ticket booth, berms and site landscaping. Main grandstands were added, with locker rooms, concessions, and restrooms coming in future phases.
