WALNUT, Calif. - Shelby Mills and Willie Milam both broke school records at the Mt. SAC Relays Thursday. Mills broke her own 3,000-meter steeplechase mark, while Milam bested the men's 10,000-meter record.
Mills ran to a 10:18.42 second place finish in her heat. The sophomore shattered her own school record by eight seconds. She set that previous record in her last race at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Her new time is currently sixth in the West region.
It was a big night for the Zags in the 10,000 meters. The top three times in men's program history happened Thursday night. Troy Fraley finished the 10,000 meters at 30:07.13, placing 14th in his heat, but breaking the school record. The previous program-record holder, Colin O'Neil, ran a 30:09.86 at the Mt. SAC Relays last season. Behind Fraley, teammate Conor McCandless crossed the line with a time of 31:05.81.
About 30 minutes later, Milam topped Fraley's time with a 29:49.78 finish. The senior placed 16th in the extremely fast heat, but became the first Bulldog to ever finish the 10,000 meters under 30 minutes. McCandless' time went from the ninth-fastest in GU history to 10th following Milam's finish.
Amelia Evans raced to the third-fastest 10,000-meter time in program history. She finished 12th in her heat with a time of 35:07.03. The junior ran the previous third-best time in GU history last season at the Mt. SAC Relays at 35:52.78.
In the final race of the day for the Zags, Matthew Crichlow ran a personal record in the 10,000 meters at 30:07.27. He bested his PR by 41 seconds. The junior's new time moves him from sixth on the GU all-time list to third, behind Milam and Fraley.
Gonzaga's Friday schedule begins with the women's 800 meters at the Oregon Relays. Emily Anderson, Lauren Saunders, and Molly Stroosma open the day in the event at 1:50 p.m. Live video and results are available on GoZags.com.
