SAN BRUNO, Calif.—Redshirt junior Alvaro Nazal took home First Team All-WCC honors Tuesday while Nick Kamisar earned All-WCC Honorable Mention as announced by the West Coast Conference office. The pair also teamed up to earn All-WCC Honorable Mention for doubles play.
Nazal earned First Team All-Conference with a blistering 25-10 singles record throughout the entire year and by going 11-7 in dual action. During the spring dual season, the Santiago, Chile, native played at the top spot in the Bulldogs' lineup and went 5-3 in WCC matches. He went on a five-match win streak just before conference play started, taking down opponents from No. 50 Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and Pacific, among others during the stretch. The final win during that time, a two-setter over Samuel Bloore of Saint Mary's, was his 75th career singles victory. Nazal is believed to be the only Zag in school history to reach 75 singles wins in a career. During the fall, he made the longest run ever by a Bulldog at the ITA Northwest Regionals, making the semifinals of the seven-round tournament. This is Nazal's third All-WCC singles award; he made the First Team also in 2013 and was named Honorable Mention as a freshman in 2012.
Kamisar won his second straight All-WCC Honorable Mention in singles play after going 18-10 during his senior year. In dual play, Kamisar went 10-7, picking up nine wins at No. 2 singles and one atop the lineup. He too won several consecutive matches around the time WCC play began, including a win over Pepperdine's Guilherme Hadlich, who was named Freshman of the Year Tuesday as well. On April 11, he earned a win over a highly-ranked opponent, taking down #67 Filip Vittek from San Diego. Kamisar wraps up his two-year GU career with 36 singles wins.
The two combined to earn All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles play. Together they went 14-6 on the year, winning the main brackets of both the EWU Fall Classic and the Gonzaga Fall Tournament. In dual play, the two posted a 5-3 record, going 2-1 in doubles play. They also led or tied or were tied in two matches that were halted early.
Nazal, Kamisar, and the rest of the Gonzaga men's tennis team will begin the WCC Championships Wednesday, April 22, in San Diego, Calif. As the #9 seed, the Zags will take on #8 Santa Clara in a rematch of GU‘s regular season finale. That match will take place at 9:00 a.m.
