GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Gonzaga Men's Rowing team hits the road to the Western Sprints Championships on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., on Saturday.
The Western Sprints serve as the regional qualifier for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships. The top two teams in the Varsity 8+ boat earn a spot in the IRA Nationals in Mercer Lake, N.J., in two weeks.
"We had a good week of practice after school was out," head coach Dan Gehn said. "All we need to do now is perform on race day."
Three Gonzaga boats will hit the water on Saturday, including the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Third Varsity 8+. The V8+ and 2V8+ are looking for another solid performance at the regatta after placing first and second at the Western Sprints a season ago. GU has been represented at the IRAs in three straight seasons and six of the last seven.
The GU V8+ will look to bounce back after a head-to-head loss to Washington State its last time out, while the 2V8+ will build on momentum after its defeat of Washington State just two weeks ago.
