
Men's Rowing Second Varsity 8+ Claims Win Over WSU

SILVER LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga's men's rowing team earned one victory with the Second Varsity 8+ boat on Saturday at Silver Lake, Wash.
The crews faced a 10-15 MPH headwind on a sunny day with temperatures at 55 degrees on the 2,000-meter course just outside of Spokane, Wash. The race was Gonzaga's final home regatta of the season.
The Second Varsity 8+ turned in the Zags' best performance of the day with a time of 6:43.92 to claim victory over the Cougars. The crew of Steven Peterson, Cole Garcia, Walker Capra-Smith, Connor Nash, Atticus Patterson, Devon Billy, Kyle Hagmeier, Connor Murray and Quinn Nash took down WSU by more than 16 seconds.
In the Varsity 8+, the GU team of Danielle Moorhouse, Joe Morris, Alex Lund, Bryce Dillon, Eric Engel, Ben Duermit, Alex Yuska, Carsten Beckwith-Strike and Dylan Ojeda fell to WSU by just under five seconds with a time of 6:44.26.
"Our JV raced very well today, but our Varsity was lackluster," head coach Dan Gehn said.
The Zags' Third Varsity 8+ boat of Douglas Kempthorne, Connor Mitchell, Keagan Tice, Jon Sailer, Matt Hoitink, Max Sombrowski, Kale Reichersamer, Connor Heffernan, James Ferris was edged out on the homestretch by just over one second with a time of 6:56.
Gonzaga's Novice 8+ of Adriana Marrero, Eric Engel, Bryce Dillon, Connor Nash, Quinn Nash, Jon Sailer, Kale Reichersamer, Max Sombrowski and James Ferris came in second in a race that featured three Washington State boats. The GU team turned in a time of 7:12.4, just nine seconds off the lead pace.
Next up for Gonzaga is the Western Sprints Championship on May 16 in Sacramento, Calif. The event serves as the Bulldogs' regional championship qualifier for the IRA National Championships.
