SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga women's tennis team began play at the Gonzaga Invitational Friday afternoon, claiming three matches at The Stevens Center in Spokane.
Nevada Apollo picked up two of those wins, prevailing in both doubles and singles play. In doubles, She and Domonique Garley downed Portland's pair of Jelena Lazarevic and Kara Okazaki 6-4. During her singles match, she squared off against Oregon's Nia Rose, also claiming a win there. The sophomore from Las Vegas controlled the first set 6-1, but Rose countered with a 4-6 tally in set two. Apollo roared back, dominating the third set 6-0 for the win. It's her seventh singles win this fall season.
Sophie Whittle also won a singles match, rushing through a two-set win over the Ducks' Alyssa Tobita. The Zag claimed both sets by 6-1 tallies for her fifth victory of the year. All five have come in two sets, although Friday's was her biggest margin of victory this fall.
Three more Bulldogs fell in tough three-setters during individual action. Junior Alex Bourguignon squared off against UO's Shweta Sangwan, dropping the first set 6-1 but countering with a 4-6 win in the second. The third set was also tightly contested, but Sangwan pulled out the victory by claiming the final two games. Kate Ketels also won the middle of three sets, falling to Oregon's Daniela Nasser 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Freshman Haruna Tsuruta also played a three-setter, the first of her collegiate career. She won the first set against Julia Eshet 4-6, but lost the next two 6-1 and 6-2 for the loss.
Rounding out the Zags' day, Garley lost to the Ducks' Marlou Kluiving in two sets during her singles match. In doubles, Bourguignon and Graciela Rosas fell 6-3 to a pair from Portland, and Whittle and Ketels took four games but lost to a Pilot duo as well.
The Bulldogs will continue the Gonzaga Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 12, with the tournament's second day. Doubles play will begin at 12:30 p.m., again at The Stevens Center.
