Bulldog Invite Day Two Results
SPOKANE, Wash.-It was another day at home and another strong showing for Gonzaga University women's tennis Saturday as six individuals and two pairs advanced to bracket finals on day two of their own Bulldog Invite.
The Zags' dominance can most easily be seen in Singles Flight E, where Graciela Rosas and Domonique Garley will square off for the bracket title. Garley reached the championship match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Idaho's Shion Watabe, and Rosas advanced when her opponent, Marta Heinen of Eastern Washington, retired due to an injury. At the time, however, Rosas was up 6-0, 2-1 in that contest.
For the second day in a row, freshman Katie Day posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory, beating Kailyn Skjonsby of Seattle U on Saturday. She'll face Idaho's Claire Yang in the Flight F title match Sunday.
In B Singles, Nevada Apollo downed Melissa Coburn 6-3, 6-2 to reach the final, her second of the season. She also competed for a bracket championship at the SMU Invite to begin the year. Haruna Tsuruta will also be seeing her second championship match of the tournament slate Sunday after downing Idaho's Ana Batiri 7-5, 6-2. The freshman from Fukuoka, Japan, is competing in the C flight this weekend.
Junior Alex Bourguignon also advanced with a two-set win Saturday, downing Sally Partington of Portland State with consecutive 6-3 tallies. Bourguignon competes in the D Singles bracket.
Two more Bulldogs played in bracket semifinal matches Saturday as both Sophie Whittle and Kate Ketels lost tough three-setters in flights A and C, respectively.
In doubles play, Bourguignon and Rosas combined to beat a Seattle U squad 6-0 in the C Flight, moving onto the championship. Apollo and Garley did the same in the B Doubles bracket, beating a pair from Portland State 6-2.
The Zags will wrap up the Bulldog Invite on Sunday, Nov. 6 with the tournament's third-round matches. Doubles play will once more begin at 8:30 a.m. in The Stevens Center.
