PORTLAND, Ore.--The Gonzaga University men's tennis team played its first road match of the 2016 West Coast Conference season Saturday, falling 6-1 to Portland in Portland's Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
Freshman Ruadhan O'Sullivan posted Gonzaga's lone win on the day after moving up to No. 2 singles. In the new spot, he doubled up the Pilots' Mathieu Garcia 6-3 in the first set and dominated the second by a 6-1 tally. With the win, O'Sullivan advanced to a 4-1 record in dual play, the best mark on the squad.
At No. 3 singles, Jordan Smith tested Garcia's twin, Pierre Garcia. Smith won that contest's first set in a tiebreak at 6-7 and Garcia edged Smith in the second set 7-5. The Pilot closed out the match with a 6-2 third-set victory.
Junior Ronzai Saurombe also forced a first set tiebreak during his match at No. 5 singles, winning six games during the first frame against Alex Wallace. Wallace, however won the tiebreak for a 1-0 match lead, and the Pilot took the second 6-3 for the win. That Portland point clinched the victory for the Pilots.
Portland opened the match by winning the doubles point with victories on courts Nos. 2 and 3. Both of those contests finished 6-2 in favor of the hosts. The top doubles matchup, Jordan and Hayden Smith versus Mike Pervolarakis and M. Garcia remained unfinished.
The Bulldogs (2-3, 0-2 WCC) will now return to Spokane and to non-conference action as they next host Portland State. That President's Day contest will take place Monday, Feb. 15 at 3:00 p.m. in The Stevens Center.
