Women's Rowing Sweeps Five Races at Oregon State

"The coaches were very pleased with how the boats performed this first race of the season," head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "All boats raced aggressively, and we are looking forward to getting back to work as we prepare for our upcoming season."
The teams had great conditions with only a slight headwind. In the Varsity 8, Gonzaga edged Oregon State by about 2.4 seconds in the fastest time of the day by any boat of 6:38.69. That was just ahead of OSU's 6:41.02.
In the Varsity 4, GU cruised to a nine-second victory over Oregon State with a time of 7:56.62 compared to the Beavers' 8:05.41. The Second Varsity 4 also turned in an impressive showing down the stretch to finish one second ahead of Oregon State with a time of 8:02.5.
"It was a good starting point going into the next few weeks [for the fours]," assistant coach Kari Durgan said. "We have a lot of work to do, but it should be an exciting group to work with."
In the Second Varsity 8 race, Gonzaga turned in the widest winning margin of the day, defeating OSU by 14 seconds with a time of 6:54.10 to the Beavers' 7:08.16. GU's Third Varsity 8 took the remaining victory with a time of 7:13.6, seven seconds ahead of Oregon State and 20 seconds ahead of GU's Fourth Varsity 8.
"The team depth this season has proven to be tenacious," assistant coach Marisa Wortman said. "It has been fun to have a fully motivated team working together to get faster."
The Gonzaga women's rowing team will be back in competition in less than one week when they take on Washington State at home on Silver Lake just outside of Spokane, Wash. Check GoZags.com during the week for more details.
