
Lions Take Conference-Opener from Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Loyola Marymount used a goal in the 84th minute to pull away from Gonzaga women's soccer, 3-1, Friday night at Luger Field.
In the West Coast Conference opener for both teams, the Lions (6-2-3, 1-0-0 WCC) had a 9-8 edge in shots, placing six shots on goal. GU had four shots on frame.
Loyola Marymount opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Sarah Sanger headed a corner kick to Sarina Bolden, who then lofted a ball to the far post, where Sanger kicked it into the net. It was Sanger's third goal of the season and Bolden's second assist of the season.
Nine minutes later, Bolden struck again, this time on the scoring end. She recorded her fourth goal of the season off of a cross from Gabbie Sanfilippo over the GU defense, and slid the ball into the net at the far post. It was Sanfilippo's first assist of the season.
Mari Kneisel scored her first goal of the season for the Zags (4-4-2, 0-1-0) with 18 minutes left in the match. The junior fought a ball away from the LMU defense and struck it into the net.
The Lions scored their third goal with six minutes remaining. Maddie Medved played a corner kick into the box and Shelby Cormier headed it in. It was Cormier's second goal of the season and Medved's third assist of the season.
Loyola Marymount took six corner kicks to Gonzaga's three. Charlee Pruitt made three saves for LMU, while Sarah Swanson had one in the Zags' net. Bolden took a match-high four shots, with three on goal. Eight different Bulldogs took a shot in the game.
Gonzaga welcomes No. 25 Pepperdine (5-3-3, 0-0-1) to Luger Field Sunday. The Waves played to a scoreless draw at Portland Friday. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com Sunday.
