Bourguignon and Tsuruta's Run Ends in Quarterfinals

PALO ALTO, Calif.--The Gonzaga women's tennis team saw one final bit of history Saturday as Alex Bourguignon and Haruna Tsuruta reached the doubles quarterfinal at the ITA Northwest Regionals at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calf.
The Zag duo reached the quarters by beating California's Jasie Dunk and Maria Smith 8-6. In that quarterfinal contest, they fell to the third-seeded pair of Shweta Sangwan and Alyssa Tobita from Oregon, ending their time in the regional championship's main doubles bracket.
Bourguignon and Tsuruta's quarterfinal run equals the deepest run by a Zag duo in program history. In 2015, current junior Sophie Whittle and then-partner Samantha Polayes reached the quarters as well.
Whittle was also competing in the Round of 16 Saturday, falling to the fifth-seeded duo from Stanford with current playing partner Graciela Rosas. Domonique Garley and Kate Ketels also competed in the Round of 16, taking four games off fourth-seeded Caroline Lampl and Melissa Lord of Stanford but losing 8-4.
One doubles pair and three individuals, meanwhile, picked up consolation victories Saturday. Nevada Apollo and Ashleigh Jacobs won their pairs contest 8-4, and Apollo also won her singles match 6-3, 6-4 over Fresno State's Emma Wilson. Bourguignon beat Fresno State's Abigail Watanabe 7-5, 6-1 for her second win of the day, and her doubles partner Tsuruta downed Oregon's Paiton Wagner 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (8) as well.
The Bulldogs will conclude their time at the ITA Northwest Regionals on Sunday, Oct. 22. Doubles play starts at 10:00 a.m., again at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
