PALM DESERT, Calif. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team finished the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at 36-over (900) in 18th place Sunday at the Classic Club Golf Course.
After improving their first round total by three strokes in the second round, the Zags had another three stroke improvement in the final round. GU had its lowest round of the tournament Sunday at nine-over (297).
"The course was stretched out and the hole locations were in more difficult positions," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Our second nine, which was the front nine, ended up getting the best of us. The positive is we got off to a solid start, where we played our first nine holes even-par and we were scoring similar to the leading teams."
Nick Nolan tied for 38th at four-over (220). After back-to-back rounds of 73, he carded a 74 (+2) in Round 3. The freshman had 12 pars and three birdies in the final round. He finished the tournament with 36 pars.
Ryan Gaske had the lowest round of the day for Gonzaga. He finished at one-over (73) in Round 3. The senior was one-under after the first 10 holes, ending the round with 13 pars and two birdies. He tied for 68th at 10-over (226).
David Ganz tied for 84th. He had a 229 (+13) three-round total. The junior was three-over (75) in the third round. Chris Mogg had an 81 (+10) on the final day, tying for 98th at 16-over (232). Ben DuBois also carded a 75 (+3) Sunday. He was 20-over (236) in the tournament, tied for 111th.
Oregon placed three golfers in the top-five and won the team title. The No. 10 Ducks were 26-under (838) in the tournament, nine strokes ahead of second-place Colorado. Oregon's Wyndham Clark and Norman Xiong both finished at 11-under (205) sharing medalist honors.
"It wasn't a great week for us but we knocked off some rust," Gray said. "We've got a few weeks until our next event and we have some positive things to build on."
Gonzaga hosts the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore., March 12-14. The eighth annual event at the Bandon Dunes Resort will be played on the Old MacDonald Course this year. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
