SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga University women's tennis team wrapped up its season-opening homestand Sunday morning, downing Utah State 6-1 at The Stevens Center.
"I'm happy with our composure today," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "Utah State is a very emotional team and they brought a lot of energy. It's easy to get out of our zone when we're fired up like that, but we did a good job of sticking to what we do best."
The Zags began the day with a doubles point victory. On court one, Nevada Apollo and Domonique Garley rushed out to an early lead before putting away their Aggie foes 6-3. Haruna Tsuruta and Kate Ketels clinched the point shortly after with a 6-4 victory on court three.
Gonzaga then won five singles matches, including the first four that finished for the dual win. Garley got things rolling with another strong win on court two, downing Sophia Haleas 6-1, 6-2. It is her fifth dual win of the season. Also picking up win No. 5 Sunday, Apollo dispatched Nini Guensler in straight 6-2, 6-2 sets atop the singles lineup.
Both Alex Bourguignon and Graciela Rosas had the opportunity to clinch the dual, and it was the upperclassman Bourguignon who put it away. She capped off a 6-3, 7-5 victory on court four for the honor. Rosas followed up shortly after with a 6-0, 7-6 (6) win at No. 2 singles. Those two wins put the team score at 5-0 in favor of the Zags.
Utah State got its lone point at No. 3 singles, but Ketels finished off the match with a three-set victory on court five. She won her first and final sets against Sabrina Demerath.
With the win, the Zags advance to 6-0 on the year and have equaled the program's best start to a dual year since at least 2000. They also began the 2015 campaign 6-0 with all six wins coming at home.
Gonzaga has just over two weeks off until its next match, a March 14 contest at Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii. That dual begins a stretch of four matches in six days over Gonzaga's spring break with two taking place in Honolulu and two in Reno, Nevada.
