WTEN Suffers First Conference Loss

SAN DIEGO, Calif.-The Gonzaga women's tennis team suffered its first West Coast Conference defeat Thursday, falling 4-1 to San Diego at the Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego.
Sophomore Sophie Whittle claimed the Bulldogs' lone point, downing Nicole Anderson in her return to the No. 1 singles slot. The Nipomo, Calif., native doubled up Anderson 6-3 in the first set and swept the second 6-0 for the win, her seventh of the dual season. She had spent her previous seven matches in the second singles position.
Whittle's point, coming from the first singles contest to finish, evened the dual at 1-1 after the Toreros won the doubles point. They took both pairs matches that finished, winning 6-2 on court three and 6-4 on court one.
After the top singles match finished, the Toreros won the next three to clinch the match. Playing at No. 2 singles for just the third time in her career, Graciela Rosas fell 6-1, 6-2 to Daniela Morales in the second match that finished. On court three, Alex Bourguignon lost to Gemma Garcia 6-1, 6-3, and the clincher came on court four when Haruna Tsuruta claimed five games in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Colomba DiFilippo.
The Zags (11-2, 2-1 WCC) return to action Saturday, April 1, with a match at BYU. That contest will begin at 11:00 a.m. Pacific (12:00 p.m. Mountain) in Provo, Utah.
