CHANDLER, Ariz. - David Ganz was one-under (71) after the first round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, and sits at one-over (145) following the first two rounds in a tie for 29th place.
Ganz has 23 pars and six birdies after the first two rounds of the tournament on the Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club. He has the second-lowest average in the 111-golfer field on course's Par-3 holes at 2.63 (-3). The junior is also two-under on Par-5 holes (4.75). He made 12 pars and two birdies in the second round. Ganz was even-par on the front-nine and two-over on the back in Round 2, finishing with a 74 (+2). His first round 71 matched his third-lowest round of the season.
Ryan Gaske is a stroke behind Ganz at two-over (146) in a tie for 33rd. He opened the tournament with a 74 (+2), before carding a 72 (E) in the second round. The Brisbane, Australia native, was even-par on the front-nine and back-nine in Round 2. He had three birdies and 12 pars in the second round. Gaske has 25 pars through the first two rounds.
Nick Nolan is tied for 60th at five-over (149). He was three-over (75) in the first round, before a 74 (+2) in the second round. He made 13 pars in Round 2, and was even-par on the back-nine.
"Ryan, David and Nick were fairly steady today, but our fourth score had a negative impact on our score," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "In addition, we didn't post any rounds under par and our par 5 scoring average beat us up pretty good, playing them +11 as a group."
Chris Mogg (T93rd) and Tyler Munetake (T103rd) are 13-over (157) and 20-over (164).
"I spent the entire day with Chris and he played pretty well the first round, but had a few hiccups off the tee that cost him four penalty shots," Gray said. "The second round he was hanging in there even though he wasn't striking the ball particularly well, but couldn't quite hold it together down the stretch."
The Zags are in 15th place at 21-over (597). GU was also in 15th after the first round at eight-over (296).
Long Beach State climbed four spots on the team leaderboard after posting a 279 total (-9) in Round 2. The 49ers were even-par (288) in the first round, and are nine-under (567) entering the third and final round. UC Santa Barbara is in second at five-under (571).
Aaron Beverly of Sacramento State and Long Beach State's Joe Fryer are tied atop the individual leaderboard at seven-under (137). Fryer carded the lowest round of the day with a 66 (-6) in the second round, edging out Beverly's 67 (-5) in Round 2.
"Tomorrow we need to keep the ball out of the desert to avoid the penalty shots," Gray said. "If we can keep up the positive attitudes and smart decision making we've had, then we're bound to get all of us to click at the same time and post a great score."
The final round begins Tuesday morning at 8:30. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
