SPOKANE, Wash.--As they did all year, the Gonzaga women's tennis team enjoyed some home cooking inside The Stevens Center Saturday as the Bulldogs swept Pacific 4-0 to cap off an unbeaten dual season at home.
The Zags began the match with a pair of doubles victories to clinch the doubles point. On court two, Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas swept their Pacific foes 6-0, but the other pairs contests were much closer. On court three, Alex Bourguignon and Kate Ketels clinched the point with a 7-5 extra-game win, and the No. 1 doubles contest was abandoned with the Zags up 4-1 in a tiebreak.
Gonzaga won all three singles contests to finish, grinding out a trio of two-set victories. On court one, Nevada Apollo downed Maayan Sela 6-3, 6-2 in the first match to finish, giving the Zags a 2-0 advantage. Shortly after, Ketels finished off a strong 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sabrina Rodriguez on court five, and Rosas clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anneroos Nederstigt.
With the win, the Zags advanced to 15-2 overall (6-1 WCC), 10 of which have come during home matches. The unbeaten year at home is their first inside The Stevens Center, which opened before the 2014 dual campaign. Since the building opened, the Zags have gone 34-10 in dual play at home with 20 of those victories coming in the last two seasons.
Three Zags finished the year without a home dual loss: Rosas (9-0), Ketels (8-0), and Domonique Garley (8-0). Additionally, three pairs - Ketels/Haruna Tsuruta, Rosas/Whittle, and Bourguignon/Ketels went undefeated in dual doubles play inside Stevens as well.
"We obviously spend hours and hours in here training, it's where we're most comfortable," said Gonzaga assistant coach Natalie Pluskota about The Stevens Center. "We know our facility, and we know we're at GU and we battle. But more importantly, the fans and spectators that come out; the girls love playing for people and love the support."
At 6-1 in West Coast Conference play, the Bulldogs enter their final weekend of the regular season in second place in the conference standings. They'll wrap up the regular season in Southern California with a match at Loyola Marymount Friday, April 21, and one at conference-leading Pepperdine Saturday, April 22.
