PORTLAND, Ore.--The Gonzaga women's tennis team won its fourth West Coast Conference match of the season Saturday, but it was a battle as the Zags downed Portland 4-3 at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center in Portland.
"I was a little disappointed with our doubles today, but we did a great job rebounding in singles, especially our top three," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "The bottom part of Portland's lineup did a great job competing, and we were fortunate to get the win."
After dropping the doubles point to begin the match, Gonzaga took the dual lead by winning the first three singles matches to finish. Reigning WCC Singles Player of the Week Sophie Whittle tied the match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court two. The sophomore now has 15 during the school year with nine of those coming during duals.
At No. 3 singles, Graciela Rosas tacked on another point with another two-set victory. She took her first frame against Jelena Lazarevic 7-5 before doubling the Pilot up 6-3 during the second. The Mexicali, Mexico, native advanced to 11-2 during dual action this spring.
Atop the lineup, Nevada Apollo returned to the courts after missing two matches. She took the first and third sets of a three-setter against Jelena Lukic for the win, her 10th of the dual season.
Portland leveled the match with wins on court four and court five - including Kate Ketels' first loss of the dual season - but Domonique Garley clinched the match with a three-setter at No. 6 singles. Garley took the first set 6-3, but foe Anna Oberg swept the second at 0-6, forcing a deciding third. In that final frame, Garley once again doubled up Oberg for the 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 victory. With the win, Garley remained undefeated in dual play at 11-0.
"Domo played a clutch third set, and Alex Bourguignon did a fantastic job fighting throughout her match. We are excited to come back to The Stevens Center next week!"
The Bulldogs (13-2, 4-1 WCC) will now return home for their final two home matches of the season. They welcome Saint Mary's on Friday, April 14, and Pacific comes to Spokane a day later.
