SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga women's tennis team began the 2017-18 season Friday by seeing numerous doubles pairs and individuals advance at their own Bulldog Invite.
"It was really great being back on the court competing as a team today," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "The girls really did a great job competing and battling. We cannot wait to get back at it tomorrow."
The Zags were perfect in doubles play, going 4-0 on the day and advancing all four pairs. Domonique Garley and Kate Ketels posted the morning's big win, breezing into the Bulldog Doubles semifinal with a 6-1 win over their Eastern Washington foes. Both squads in the Zag Doubles bracket - Graciela Rosas/Haruna Tsuruta and Alex Bourguignon/Katie Day - moved on after 6-2 wins as well.
In singles play, seven Bulldogs reached the semifinals. Both Rosas and Nevada Apollo advanced in the Red Singles flight, the top flight, after strong two-set wins. In the White Singles bracket, both Tsuruta and Ketels continued on, as did freshman Ashleigh Jacobs in Blue Singles.
In the final bracket, the Zag Singles flight, both Bourguignon and Day reached the semifinals as well. Bourguignon won every set she played against Portland State's Ashley Knecht during her quarterfinal match, and Day picked up two wins en route to her semifinal berth.
The Zags will continue the season-opening tournament Saturday, Sept. 30. Semifinal doubles matches will begin at 9:00 a.m., once again at The Stevens Center.
