Gonzaga Pairs Highlight Season-Opener

Zags began Marisa Wortman era with annual regatta
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team their 2018-19 season by hosting Washington State in the annual Head of the Spokane on Saturday.
On a beautiful fall morning on the Spokane River, the Zags kicked off of their season on a 5,000-meter course. There was mild increasing tailwind into the morning, but overall a fantastic day for rowing. Marisa Wortman began her head coaching debut for Gonzaga, along with a new staff.
The Cougars' second novice eight (21:02) finished ahead of their first novice eight (21:11), and GU's first novice eight's finish of 21:21. WSU's varsity eight had a 17:40 finish, while its second varsity eight crossed at 18:53.
Washington State's varsity four "A" team had a top time of 18:31. Gonzaga's varsity four "D" team had the next best time at 18:50.
The Gonzaga "C" pairs boat crossed the line at 20:12, just ahead of the Zags' "A" pairs boat (20:26). Washington State had a 20:37 finish.
"One of the coxswain standouts today was Samone Sims," Wortman said. "She had a really good race and motivated her four to compete at a really high level. It was exciting."
The Bulldogs travel to Portland, Ore., for the Portland Fall Classic on Oct. 28.
