TACOMA, Wash. — Gonzaga's women's golf team put together a strong second round on the two-round day at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club on Monday.
Freshman Quynn Duong kept up her solid play in the fall season, firing a second round 69 that featured six birdies and moved her into a tie for fourth overall in the tournament. Duong opened with a 77 in the first round on Monday, but climbed the leaderboard fast and enters Tuesday's third round just three shots behind the leader.
Duong's day helped Gonzaga move from 15th place as a team after the first round to 13th overall. GU shot a 317 as a team in the first round and 304 in the second round to total +45 on the day. The Zags sit just eight shots out of the top five.
"I was happy with our effort today, our young team continues to learn," head coach Brad Rickel said. "Playing better during the second round of 36-hole day is a good step for us. Quynn continues to impress. A couple bad swings in the morning round is really the only difference from her and the leader. And Francesca continues to show she means business, I'm really happy with the way she is going about her round."
In the first round, it was Francesca Santoni and Duong who got off to solid starts, each playing their first seven holes even-par. Santoni ended the round with the team's best score with a four-over 76 that included three birdies, while Duong had two birdies on her way to a five-over 77.
In the second round, Duong's 69 was coupled with a 75 from Santoni and 77 from Jessica Mangrobang was Gonzaga's best of the afternoon. Santoni posted four birdies in the second round to give her seven on the day.
Houston Baptist and Grand Canyon lead the team race with a +21 score after the first two rounds.
Action will continue with the final round shotgun start at 8 a.m. of the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational on Monday at Tacoma Country & Golf Club.
