Australian forward to join Bulldogs in 2019-20
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's basketball head coach Lisa Fortier announced the signing of Eliza Hollingsworth to a National Letter of Intent for the 2019-20 season Thursday.
Eliza Hollingsworth
Melbourne, Victoria (Australia) | Mentone Grammar School | 6-2 | Forward
Hollingsworth joins a long line of dynamic forwards at Gonzaga and will add length and versatility to the Bulldogs' front court. Most recently, Hollingsworth represented the Basketball Australia (BA) Centre of Excellence in the South East Australian Basketball League, averaging 4.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest.
Hollingsworth has plenty of international playing experience as she led the Australian Sapphires to a gold medal finish at the U16 Asian Championships in Bengaluru, India as well as a bronze medal finish at the U17 World Championships in 2018 in Minsk, Belarus. She was also a scholarship holder at the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence, part of the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, in 2017 and 2018.
"I'm excited to develop my game under some of the most experienced and disciplined coaches on the west coast and to challenge myself against elite level athletes day in and day out," said Hollingsworth.
The 6-foot-2 forward has also played for Vic Metro out of Victoria since 2016. She represented Vic Metro at the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Australian Championships, helping the team to gold medal finishes in 2016 and 2018 with a bronze medal finish in 2017. During Vic Metro's 2018 gold medal run, Hollingsworth averaged 11.33 points and 9.78 rebounds per game shooting 44.0 percent from the floor in addition to 91.89 percent shooting from the charity stripe. She has also been selected to represent Vic Metro at the Under 20s held in Canberra in 2019.
A former scholarship holder of the National Intensity Program (NITP) and the National Performance Program (NPP), both of Victoria, Australia, Hollingsworth was also a scholarship holder at the Mentone Grammar School. She played her junior basketball with the Victorian Junior Basketball League for the Knox Raiders, Melbourne Tigers and Sandringham, winning a Victorian Championship.
"Eliza fits our style of play so well," Fortier said. "She is a versatile post who can score around the basket as well as from the perimeter. She is a tough rebounder, and she will also be able to guard multiple positions. Eliza has played against some of the best competition in the world, and she is coming to us with some high level experience. We are so happy she is joining the Zag Family."
