The honor is the first of her career
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the first time in her career, Gonzaga's Chandler Smith was named the West Coast Conference women's basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Smith was instrumental in leading Gonzaga past then-No. 8/7 Stanford Sunday, tallying a game-high 20 points off 6-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the line. Smith helped secure GU's first win over a ranked opponent since 2016 and their fifth-ever win over a top 10 program by scoring four points in the last 13 seconds to thwart the Cardinal last-ditch effort. The senior guard added three rebounds and three assists in the win.
Earlier in the week, Smith helped the Zags to a 50-39 win over visiting Colorado State with five points, four boards, two assists and two steals. She finished the week shooting 44 percent from the floor and 88 percent from the charity stripe to average 12.5 points.
Gonzaga hosts Washington State Sunday at 2 p.m. at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
