PINEHURST, N.C. - Mother nature had her own plans for the first day of the Inaugural Pinehurst Women's Intercollegiate on Wednesday, as the players were able to play, but only four players in the field were able to shoot below 80, with +1 being the top score by three strokes.
With the action commencing on prestigious Pinehurst #8, the Zags and the seven other teams battled freezing cold temperatures in the 30s with winds reaching 25 mph. The course played "brutally tough" for the field according to Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel.
The Zags finished +50 as a team and in fourth place. Freshman Francesca Santoni led the Bulldogs with an 83, as she managed five pars on each side to finish tied for 10th. Nina Novilla was one stroke back in 13th and Jena Gao had one of only 24 birdies in the field, scoring a two on the par-three fifth to finish 23rd. Jessica Mangrobang shot an 85 to tie for 16th and Diana Araneta shot an 86 to finish 22nd as all five Zags were in the top half of the field.
The Zags were third in the field going +9 on par-fives and +8 on par-threes. They were second with 40 pars and Santoni was first in the field going even on par-five holes.
Eastern Kentucky leads the field at +27 and Ragga Kristinsdottir of EKU leads the field by three strokes. The teams will play round two of three tomorrow. Live scoring is available on GoZags.com.
