Women's Tennis Sweeps Santa Clara, 4-0
3/31/2018 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
The Zags (13-4, 4-0) started the day off right with the doubles point and then carried the momentum into singles, getting wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots before clinching it with Sophie Whittle at No. 1.
"I was really proud of the team this weekend," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "It is always tough to go on the road in conference and win, so this was a very successful trip. The score was not indicative of how close the match was. Santa Clara played well today without their No. 1 player. We did a great job of staying focused and it was a great win for us. We are really excited to get back home and play Pepperdine and LMU next week."
In doubles, Haruna Tsuruta and Alex Bourguignon continued their hot play with their fifth consecutive win, beating Santa Clara's No. 2 pair 6-2. Nevada Apollo and Ashleigh Jacobs then clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Tsuruta carried her steady play over to singles, grabbing a straight-set win at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. Kate Ketels then followed with a 7-6(5), 6-0 win at No. 6 to set up the win for the Zags.
Whittle dropped the second set in her match, but came back to dominate the third in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win at the top spot in the lineup.
GU will be back at home next weekend against No. 2-ranked Pepperdine on Friday and Loyola Marymount on Saturday.
