AZUSA, Calif. -- Gonzaga's Brandon Pollard and Scott Kopczynski ran the fourth and seventh-fastest 1,500-meter times in program history at the Bryan Clay Invitational Friday.
Six Zags ran in the men's 1,500 meters at the meet in six different heats. Pollard and Kopczynski both won their heats. Pollard crossed the line at 3:46.34, placing fifth in the event. Kopczynski came in 13th-place.
Mason Villarma nearly won his heat, placing second, with a time of 3:48.84. Andrew Clusserath's time was 3:53.26, while Graham Wendle had a time of 3:57.93. Jonah Sandoval started the day with a 4:01.64 finish.
"We almost ended the evening with three straight 1,500-meter victories," Director of GU Track and Field Pat Tyson said. "Scott led from start to finish with an all-time best time! Brandon would follow that up 10 minutes later with an all-time best of 3:46.34. He hammered the homestretch passing three runners taking for the Zags!
"The last race was a near perfect race for Mason. He made a hard move with 350 meters to go and opened a 12-meter lead before being passed down the homestretch! In earlier races, Andrew had his shoe ripped off and ran the race with one shoe for 1,450 meters! He would still run a personal best 3:53.26. Graham's 3:57.53 was a seasonal best."
A number of Bulldogs are running at the Spokane Memorial Open at Spokane Falls Community College Saturday. Results will be available on GoZags.com following the meet.
