SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's track and field team has seven student-athletes in three events at the sixth annual Oregon State High Performance Meet. The Zags will run in the meet's distance carnival at the Whyte Track and Field Center Friday.
Former Olympians and a strong collegiate field will compete at the meet. Approximately 700 competitors are expected for the event, which has evolved from modest beginnings to one of the premier regular-season meets in the Pacific Northwest. Twenty-five teams are expected to be in attendance spanning all levels of collegiate athletics. Teams competing are Oregon State, Oregon, Gonzaga, Colorado, Idaho, Portland State and more.
The Zags appear in the meet for the first time in program history. Aimee Piercy is entered in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, the first event featuring GU in the meet at 6:40 p.m.
Currently, Kellen Manley has the 16th-best time in the West Region in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:51.26). His time also ranks 20th in the nation. Sammy Truax's time of 8:55.95 ranks 27th in the region and 42nd in the country. Alex Heffelfinger (8:56.97) is 34th in the region and 52nd in the nation. Troy Fraley ran the 36th-fastest time in the region at last week's Mt. SAC Relays.
Jordan Thurston's 35:11.04 10,000-meter finish at the Mt. SAC Relays ranks 52nd in the West Region.
