EUGENE, Ore. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs completed their last race before the Western Sprints on Saturday, facing No. 18 Oregon State on Dexter Lake in Eugene, Ore.
The Beavers were able to take all four races, but the Zags, battling illness and injury, were within 10 seconds in the top three races.
The varsity eight finished at 6:02.19, less than nine seconds behind the Beavers. The second varsity eight came home at 6:10.38, seven second behind OSU. The third varsity eight finished at 6:15.05, less than two seconds off the pace of the Beavers. All three boats recorded their fastest times of the spring. The novice eight finished at 6:30.3, 20 seconds behind the Beavers.
"It was good to get up against some fast boats," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "We raced reasonably well, but still need to get tougher in the middle thousand (meters) of our races. This break from racing this next weekend will let us heal up from illness and injuries, and give us some time to iron a few things out for the Western Sprints."
The Zags will prep for the next two weeks before heading to the Western Sprints on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. looking for a berth to the IRA Championships.
