Ranked as 8th-best wing in the country
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's basketball head coach Lisa Fortier announced the signing of McKayla Williams to a National Letter of Intent for the 2020-21 season Wednesday.
McKayla Williams
Los Angeles | Windward High School | 6-1 | Guard
Williams, a four-star recruit out of Los Angeles, will join the Zags as a freshman in 2020. Ranked as the eighth-best wing prospect by ESPN and the 72nd best player in her class, Williams has led Windward High School to two CIF Championships: the California Division I State title in 2017 and the California Open Division State title in 2018.
Williams also led the Wildcats to a CIF Southern Section Open Division title in both 2018 and 2019, and last season led Windward to a 26-6 overall record and a No. 13 national ranking, according to MaxPreps. Williams picked up back-to-back Second Team All-CIF Southern Section in 2018 and 2019, as well as Second Team All-Gold Coast League in 2019 after averaging a double-double (13 points per game, 10 rebounds per game) during her junior campaign.
"I chose Gonzaga because I established a great connection with the coaching staff," Williams said. "And, I wanted to win!"
Williams is an agile perimeter guard with versatility in the front court, with the ability to rebound and attack well in transition and the ability to finish in traffic with either hand. Her ability to shoot outside stretches out the defense, and she is able to successfully execute plays in the half court.
Williams is also a stellar student, earning back-to-back honor roll distinctions.
"McKayla is going to fit right in with the Zags," Fortier said. "She is an extremely long guard, who defends and rebounds like crazy. She has played every position on the floor through her career so far and is going to add to the versatility of the class. She finishes around the basket extremely well and has developed a perimeter shot to round out her game. McKayla has been coached at a very high level and understands the intensity of the college game. She has a big personality to go with her big smile. We cannot wait to coach her. Welcome to the family KK!"
