Zag men have best-ever finish in sixth place
COLFAX, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's cross country team had its best-ever finish at the NCAA West Regional Championships, placing sixth at the Colfax Golf Club Friday. James Mwaura had the best-ever finish by a Zag at regionals, crossing the line in third.
Mwaura's time was 29:53.2. The sophomore punched his ticket to the NCAA National Championships next Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. The Gonzaga men will have to wait until the full field for the national championships is announced on Saturday at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. There is a live selection show on NCAA.com. The Bulldog men will be looking for their first-ever selection to the national championships as a team.
A total of 31 teams compete as a team at the NCAA Div. I Championships. Eighteen bids are automatic (top two teams in each of nine regions), and 13 bids are at-large. After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals per gender are selected to compete at the NCAA Championships. Among individuals not selected as members of qualifying teams in the above process, the top four finishers at each regional meet are automatically selected (each must have finished within the top 25 of the region).
Mwaura is only the second GU men's runner to ever qualify for nationals. Matthew Crichlow was the first in 2015, after placing 18th at regionals. Crichlow was the first Gonzaga men's runner to be named All-Region, last season Mwaura was the second after becoming the first Zag to run a sub-30-minute 10K.
Peter Hogan became the third All-Region finisher in program history Friday. He crossed the line in 15th with a time of 30:02.6. His time is the second-fastest 10K all-time at GU, and the third-best finish ever by a Bulldog at regionals.
Cullen McEachern placed 35th at 30:39.0, Jake Perrin was 46th at 30:50.9 and Phillip Fishburn was 49th with a time of 30:55.4. Riley Moore (31:02.1) and Luke Mason (31:35.3) were 58th and 91st.
The Bulldog men had a score of 148. Portland defended its team title with a score of 65. Stanford was second at 78, and Oregon was third at 90. Washington's Andrew Jordan placed first with a time of 29:43.4. Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse was second at 29:44.9.
The Zag women had a score of 460 and came in 15th, the best Gonzaga finish at regionals in five years. Claire Manley had the best finish by a GU women's runner since 2015, placing 27th with a time of 20:37.0. Ally Legard ran a season best, 21:31.0, and placed 96th.
Natasha Bernal came in 107th with a time of 21:434. Makenna Edwards (21:46.7) and Emily Phelps (21:46.8) were 116th and 117th. Alicia Anderson (22:06.9) and Brittney Hansen (22:07.8) placed 145th and 146th.
Stanford won the women's regional title with a score of 39. Washington was second with a score of 49. Stanford had three runners in the top six, including the top two finishers.
