Men’s Tennis Signs Two Standouts to NLIs

Gomez, Trkulja to join GU for 2020-21

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga men's tennis head coach Jonas Piibor announced the signing of two standouts to National Letters of Intent on Monday. Pablo Gomez and Sasha Trkulja will join the squad for the 2020-2021 season.

"I believe that both Pablo and Sasha will be great additions to our team," Piibor said. "It was very evident throughout the recruiting process how much they love the game of tennis and the necessary work that it takes to continue to develop. In addition, they are both quality young men who are very good students, which is something that we certainly value as well."

Gomez, from Mexico City, Mexico, attended Moratouglou Academy in France, competing in tournaments around the country. He has a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 13.2 with several wins over higher-rated players.

"I chose Gonzaga University because its system allows me to achieve my athletic and academic goals while becoming a better person in the process," Gomez said.

Trkulja, from Toronto, Canada, is a two-time ITF champion and is the No. 1-ranked player under 18 in Ontario. He has a UTR of 12 and a career-high ITF junior ranking in the top 350.

"I chose Gonzaga University because after spending just one day at the school, I knew that this was where I wanted to spend the next 4 years of my life," Trkulja said. "I loved how the players, along with the coaches on the tennis team, all work hard together to become better and that's just an atmosphere I want to surround myself with. Also, the school in general just made me feel at home."

Gonzaga recently completed a successful fall slate of tournaments and head into the spring dual-match season in January. The Zags are coming of a spring 2019 season that featured a program-record 16 dual-match wins and a second-place finish in the West Coast Conference, also a program-best.
