Leaderboard
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Gonzaga women's golf was solid throughout its lineup on a darkness-shortened first day of action to tie for fifth at the 54-hole Battle of the Rock in Riverside, Calif.
On a day that had a two-hour delay to start due to frost on the 6,093-yard Oak Quarry Golf Club, the players finished one full round and around two-thirds of the second round before darkness settled in. GU's five players each finished at least 11 holes in the second round.
Gonzaga sits in a tie for fifth after a 301 (+13) first-round, but is just +3 as a team through 11 holes in the second round. Tournament leader Cal Poly is a +8 as a team, while CSU Northridge and Santa Clara are tied for second at +14, and Grand Canyon is fourth at +15.
"We had a really good effort today," head coach Brad Rickel said. "Everyone was showing some rust after a four-month layoff from tournaments, but we got better as the day went on. Most of us have 25 holes to play tomorrow and we are really looking forward to moving up."
Freshman Quynn Duong followed up a first-round 76 (+4) with four birdies in her first nine holes in the second round to move up to a tie for sixth at +1 for the tournament through 30 holes.
Francesca Santoni had a tough first round at 78 (+6), but is one-under through 11 holes on the second round to move up to a tie for 19th at +5 for the tournament.
Freshman Federica Torre was solid as well in her first tournament as a Zag, carding a four-over 76 in the first round. She's two-over in the second round and sits in a tie for 30th at +6 on the tournament.
Jessica Mangrobang is in a tie for 39th at +7 on the tournament after a first round 74 (+2), and Nina Novilla is +8 in the tournament after a first round 75 (+3).
The Zags will be back on the course at 7:30 a.m. at the Oak Quarry Golf Club and will resume the last six or seven holes of the second round before playing the final round. Links to live stats can be found at GoZags.com.
