Francesca Santoni’s 69 (-3) led GU to T4th as a team

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Gonzaga's Francesca Santoni fired a career-best, three-under 69 to finish tied for fifth and lead GU to fourth as a team at the Battle of the Rock in Riverside, Calif.
In the final round, Santoni led the charge, following up six straight pars to open, with a three-under stretch over the next five holes before finishing with two more birdies in her final three holes. That followed up a one-under 71 second-round score. Santoni's rise up the leaderboard was impressive, going from a tie for 54th after a six-over 78 in the first round to a first-career Top 5 finish.
The Zags started the day with seven holes remaining on the second round after darkness limited the conclusion of the day on Monday. GU ended that round with some momentum heading to the final round immediately following. The Zags' second round total of 295 was six shots better than the first round and moved them up to fourth as a team, where they remained after a final-round 290.
"We are getting better, and Francesca just played great with the best round of her career," head coach Brad Rickel said. "Quynn [Duong] played sick all day and really gutted it out, and Federica [Torre] got better each round in her first collegiate tournament. She will continue to get better each week. I'm really proud of the team's effort."
Duong, a freshman, was solid all day long. She followed up her one-under 71 in the second round with a one-over 73 in the final round to finish tied for 12th overall.
Torre turned in three solid rounds over the weekend in her first collegiate tournament, placing in a tie for 21st overall with a two-over 74 final round and +7 overall score.
Jessica Mangrobang finished 43rd overall at +12 after a final-round 74 (+2), while Nina Novilla was 55th with a +16 total and a final-round 77 (+5).
The Zags will have a two-week break until heading to Long Beach State for The Gold Rush at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, Calif., on Feb. 25-26.
