SEAL BEACH, Calif. — Gonzaga women's golf was able to make a big move into seventh in the second round of a 36-hole day at The Gold Rush at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, Calif., on Monday.
After sitting in 12th after the first round as a team, GU shaved 16 strokes in the second round to move up to a tie for seventh as team after shooting a four-over 291. The score was the fourth-best for any team in the round and gave Gonzaga a +24 total for the day. San Jose State leads the team race at +2, followed by Sacramento State at +4 and Georgia at +11.
"We had a rough first round with too many three-putts, and we just couldn't get anything going. But, we turned it around in the afternoon and had a great round," head coach Brad Rickel said. "I was very proud of how we stayed determined throughout the long 36-hole day. Federica had a great round in her first collegiate two-round day and really just shows how much she is going to mean to this team. Jessica had a really nice 72 and just had a positive attitude throughout the day."
Freshman Federica Torre was a major reason for the big move as she shot a three-under 69 in the second round. In just her second career collegiate tournament, she sits in a tie for 10th. Torre had five total birdies in two rounds and totaled the fifth-highest number of pars at 25 in 36 holes.
Her fellow freshman Quynn Duong and veteran Jessica Mangrobang turned in solid rounds as well, sitting in a tie for 19th each. Duong opened with a 75 (+3), but turned in a second round 73 (+1), while Mangrobang opened with a 76 (+4) and followed with a 72 (E). Duong was fourth in the field with eight birdies on the day.
GU's lineup was rounded out by Francesca Santoni, who sits at +18 for the tournament, and Nina Novilla at +20.
Gonzaga will wrap up The Gold Rush with the final round on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. Links to live scoring are available at Golfstat.com.
